This February, I gave an interview to Ido Kenan on Galei Tzahal (IDF Radio) about Google's upgraded Machine Translation system, including its claims that it learns an intermediary abstract language representation, an "Interlingua".

You can listen to the interview here, or read my writeup here on Kenan's blog. Problem is, it's all in Hebrew! Well, what better than to use the fancy new Google Translate to render the thing into English?

Perfect Ambiguity

I just ran into the most perfect case of ambiguity in a signup form to remain of anonymous origin:

So, what does the text in parentheses mean?

It's to be parsed as a template: <First> <Last>, meaning the first name should come first;
It's an English-grammatical instruction (as in "first things first"): "Put your first name last", meaning the last name should come first.

I'm going with the first interpretation, but you gotta admit that this is a case where trying to make things clear only makes them confusing.

Series of tubes

In 2006 (here I go, topical as ever) Senator Ted Stevens made his infamous "series of tubes" gaffe, winning him eternal ridicule.

My pet theory for Stevens's misconception has been that he'd heard of Youtube (the timeframe checks out; this is about the time it started emerging) and mis-analyzed it as "U-tube", a serial letter coding a type of tube. Generalizing, the whole Internet must be a series of the A-tube, B-tube, 1-tube and HL/9-tube, no?

I recently tried searching for some verification to this theory, or at least fellow holders of this opinion. To my surprise, I found none. Stevens himself did not give this as an explanation, but I assume it would have been an embarrassing admission the higher Youtube's popularity soared. When asked, he claimed some Internet mavens actually gave him positive feedback for the tube description (equating tubes with "pipes"). Sadly, we can't ask him anymore.

התרגום הגורלי שמת מצחוק 444 1/4

הרבה זמן עבר מאז המר"ניה האחרונה.

הפעם הקש שהגדיש את סאת הגמל היה בפרק 4 של העונה השישית של רוק 30, שם ליז מדברת על מחזוריה התכופים – I menstruate a lot, שבתרגום הפך ל-מאוננת הרבה. נו טוב, אתם יודעים, הדברים המלוכלכים האלה עם m ו-s ו-r ו-t שנגמרים ב-ate.

בקליבלנד, עונה 3 פרק 6 (למה אני עדיין רואה את זה?) מציע גיבור הסדרה להתחייב בפני חדר הכושר, שעבורו כבר שילם לשנתיים, לשנה שלישית. כלומר a third year. בתרגום הביטוי הזה מצא את דרכו ל-ארבעה חודשים. מה שמראה שדווקא עצלנות אין פה (אחרת היו משאירים את זה כ-שליש שנה).

הסדרה אפיסודז בכיכוב אילן גונן חזרה לעונה שניה! מה חבל שכשמדברים שם על רייטינג בקבוצת הדמוגרפיה המיועדת, in the demo, רואה הצופה הישראלי את התרגום בגרסת ההדגמה. (עוד פרפראות על תרגום באפיסודז, אבל דווקא בגוף הסדרה, ראו בהלנגוואג' לוג כאן).

נו, זה הוא

בסרט אין כניסה לאינטליגנציה (למזוכיסטים בלבד) מתורגמת המילה genuine ל-גאונים. מה שאולי ייתכן בהקשר, אבל הופך את כל הטיעון מסביב לפחות רלוונטי.

עוד מהסרטים: במר וגברת סמית', מודיע האדון ש-I didn't really go to MIT. בתרגום הכל נעשה סלט גדול – לא באמת למדתי בקיימברידג' (שזה קצת נכון, הרי MIT יושבת בקיימברידג' שבמסצ'וסטס, אבל "ללמוד בקיימברידג'" זה ההיא באנגליה. ממש פוסט בסימן אילן גונן.)

בהמפץ הגדול, עונה 5 פרק 13, יש שלוש פנינים: הצבעה פה אחד, unanimous, הופכת חשאית. פירוק מספרים לגורמים, factor numbers, הופכים ל-השפעה על מספרים. hit that thing, במובן של "נתתי בזה", עובר משום מה לציווי הלא-קשור בכלל דבר כבר!.

באיש משפחה עונה 9 עשו פארודיה (צריך פועל לזה) על "שובו של הג'דיי" (פרק 20), שם לכל דמות בסדרה יש מקבילה מסדרת הסרטים. בשלב מסוים מגיעה דמות על-בסיס רוג'ר מ"אבא אמריקאי", ואחת הדמויות האחרות תוהה Have we already run out of our own characters? בתרגום נשמט שלב אחד של מטא, ופשוט מוסבר האם כבר יצאנו מהדמויות שלנו?. בעונה העשירית (פרק 7) הארגונים היהודיים מתחמשים לקרב, up in arms. ההיפך הגמור מהתרגום, הרימו ידיים.

וכמה אחרונים, משלהי העונה החמישית של הבית הלבן ותחילת השישית: מסוקי קרב ישראליים, gunships, תקפו בעזה. לא ספינות קרב. טורניר intramural הוא בין קבוצות שכל משתתפיהם תלמידי אותו מוסד חינוכי. איך הגיעו משם ל-במגרש סגור? זאת ועוד: פרק 4 בעונה 6 הוא מאוד לחוץ (בלי ספוילרים), אולי זה התירוץ לתרגום בחירות אמצע הקדנציה, ה-midterms, לבחינות (הקשר, מישהו?), ואולי אפילו לכך שטמבל, he's a tool, הגיע ל-הוא משמש כלי (לפחות לא עשו ממנו תותח). הפרק שאחריו לגמרי לא לחוץ, אז כבר אין תירוץ לכך שהתורים לדלק שהיו בשנות ה-70, כלומר gas lines, הפכו לצינורות דלק (וכאן המשמעות כבר מתהפכת – ממשהו שהאמריקאים לא מתגעגעים אליו, למשהו שהם אולי אפילו מייחלים לו).

Perhaps inspired by this collection of PR photos without the accompanying press release, I believe non-Hebrew speakers might find this following list amusing: some of the examples I've come across and taken the trouble of writing down, of horrendous Hebrew subtitling of English dialogue in TV and film. Some mistakes may be easy to figure out, some are not fair of me because I'm also leaving out context, others will hopefully keep you flat-out stumped.

If you do understand Hebrew, it might be more fun starting here before looking for the explanation in any of the posts (Hebrew) where I do explain the (sometimes conjectured) origins.
